IT might be getting colder but York Acorn ARLC Under-18s are starting to warm up.

In their fourth game of the Yorkshire Youth League season, they ran in nine tries, all converted by Jake Calam, to register a 54-16 victory over West Bowling.

Notable performances came from Ash Robson with three tries, Jack Byrnes and James Casey in the forwards, and Harry Bromwich and Alex Smith.

Top tackler Jordan Myres also controlled the game well from scrum-half and was only pipped to the man-of-the-match award by Calam by virtue of his 100 per cent kicking record.

Acorn were out of the blocks quickly, Bromwich posting the first points with the team’s first use of the ball. He scored again after six minutes, and, after 12, Josh Thompson fought off tacklers to put the Blue and Golds 18-0 up.

West Bowling hit back as the game became more competitive but then Robson stole the ball one on one and sprinted 50 metres to score.

Then Reece Rushworth found a gap for Acorn’s fifth try.

The second period began with Robson crossing for his second, before Acorn’s defence took the limelight, holding back a battling Bowling outfit, with Charlie Settle and Hayden Nelson leading by example.

Then really good ball skills ended with Reef Wilson extending the lead.

Acorn still had to defend hard, Casey and Jordan Myers soaking up tackles, before Robson again broke through for his hat-trick try.

Bowling struck back before Myers capped his performance with a fine final score.

Selby Warriors U15s lost 36-12 at Doncaster Toll Bar in their final game of their summer season – but the defeat did not overly mar a good campaign.

It was a disappointing loss, but a second-half revival, having been 24-0 down at the interval, typified the Selby outfit’s spirit.

Selby got moving with a converted try from full-back George Stoker.

They then dug in and played some solid rugby and, although they fell 36-6 down, they kept at it, no one more so than inspirational props Ben Copeland and Ryan Brind, second-row Frank Sherman, and Sam Stephenson, who played through the pain barrier for his team given they had no substitutes available.

The final score came as Brind ran onto a ball from Chaz Fothergill and crashed over in style for his first try and conversion for the club.

The efforts bode well for next season’s Yorkshire U16s League campaign, though the club are also keen to add to their squad – anyone interested can phone head coach Craig Hazell on 07747 164967.

The team will train though the winter on Thursdays between 6pm and 7pm, with pre-season training starting in February.
