THORPE United started their last season as juniors with a league win over a very capable Wakefield Jets side who kept the home team busy with some tidy football.

An early goal from Shaun Heselwood settled any nerves.

Ben Clowes started the move with a throw-in that was flicked on by James Arnold into the path of Corey Littlefield who provided the perfect ball for Heselwood to head home.

Wakefield levelled the scores soon after when a slick move left the Thorpe defence in no-man’s-land and goalkeeper Alex Ward was given no chance by the measured lob.

Littlefield put the home side back in front with a fine finish from a route-one approach. Jordan Emery fed Richard Buckthorpe who played the ball over the top for Littlefield to chase, the striker making no mistake in front of goal.

The sides cancelled each other out for much of the remainder of the half until determined play from David Melling created space for Tim Heaton to score his first league goal for Thorpe.

Thorpe got off to the perfect start after the break as, in the opening moments of the second half, Heaton scored his second with a powerful header from man of the match Emery’s corner.

Thorpe played some neat football for the remainder of the second half and restricted Wakefield to speculative long-range efforts while testing the Jets defence with some good attacking football.

Thorpe wrapped up a 5-1 win with a good goal and cool finish when Haydn Brown slotted home a James Arnold cross.
