TADCASTER Grammar School’s Under-13s footballers lifted the York & District Cup after a 1-0 victory over Fulford in the final at Wigginton Grasshoppers.

James Richardson netted Tadcaster’s winning goal with 20 minutes remaining in the final and head of PE Rob Solk said: “The boys worked extremely hard for one another and deserved the victory.

“It was pleasing to see all their efforts and commitment throughout the season rewarded with some silverware.

“Most of them are now hoping to continue their winning run during the forthcoming football tour to France at Easter, where they are competing in the Disneyland International Youth Football Festival.”

The game was one of six schools finals staged at Wigginton, with organiser Mark Willoughby, of Manor School, saying: “A big thank you to Wigginton for hosting.

“All round it was a fantastic event and the best finals we have had for a number of years.”

The U12s Cup was won by Joseph Rowntree, who beat Manor 5-4 on penalties after the game had ended 0-0. JoRo skipper Jamie Higginbotham picked up the man of the match award, while keeper Michael Ellis was superb in the shootout.

Joseph Rowntree also won a one-sided U14s final, beating Huntington 4-0 with goals from captain Ryan Power, Ryan Embleton, Will Hartley and Owen Marshall.

Canon Lee lifted the U15s Cup after a 5-4 shootout victory over Selby High after a 0-0 draw. Selby had a superb chance to win the game in normal time, but their shot hit the bar.

Meanwhile, the U12s play-off final saw Fulford beat Tadcaster 3-2, while Barlby beat ten-man All Saint’s 3-1 in the U16s play-off final.
