THE York & District Senior League’s Under-17s representative outfit suffered a 61-run defeat at the hands of the Nidderdale League in their latest Joe Lumb fixture.

Electing to bat first, Nidderdale lost academy player Eddie Barnes in the sixth over, but York failed to press home the advantage as 47 and 69-run partnerships took Nidderdale to a strong position of 131-3 after 30 overs.

Half-centuries from Harry Stothard and Cameron Pitt, plus a 40 from Tom Beasley, enabled Nidderdale to reach 257-8 after 50 overs, Tom Neal taking 4-70 in 15 overs.

Ryan Gaughan supported well with 2-37 and two catches, and there was also a wicket for Danny Cass and Andrew Brewster.

York’s reply began steadily but two quick wickets for the addition of only one run, with Kieron Bloor departing for 16 and Mark Jackson bowled by Barnes for a duck, put Nidderdale in control.

Haydn Bradley, a 14-year-old debutant, batted at four and performed well but failed to make his ground and was run out.

Neal, with 64, gave York some hope but failed to press on and was caught leaving York on 133-6.

Jack Spofforth, with 27, Gaughan, with 19, plus a useful knock of 38 by number nine Cass meant York finished on 196 all out.

They now need to win their final game against Heavy Woollen, at Stillington on Sunday, or face being relegated.
