CLIFTON with Rawcliffe Primary School bowed out in the last four of the Drax Cup North Area Final at Dunnington.

The York school lost to Scarborough’s Gladstone Road 165-137 in the semi-finals of the competition, the biggest under-9s cricket tournament in the UK.

Marton-based Lingfield primary were crowned North Area champions as they beat Gladstone Road by 13 runs - 136-123 - after securing a 163-144 win over East Whitby in the semi-finals.

The teams reached the last four following group stage matches involving a total of ten finalists competing at the event.

Clifton were joined by fellow York teams Rufforth and Dunnington, plus Green Hammerton, St Joseph’s, Glusburn and Richmond Methodist.

Lingfield will now play in the 2014 Drax Cup Finals at Headingley on Wednesday, July 2, as a curtainraiser to Yorkshire’s NatWest T20 Blast clash with Durham.

They will meet the area finals winners from the South, East and West.

The competition is sponsored by Drax and organised by YorkshireCounty Cricket Club in conjunction with Yorkshire Cricket Board, Yorkshire Schools’ Cricket Association and the Yorkshire Cricket Foundation.
