HEWORTH ran out comfortable winners in their second round match in the York & District Junior Cricket Association Under-15s President’s Cup at home to Clifton Alliance.

The visitors arrived at Heworth in second place in the Hirepoint Plant & Tool Hire U15s Championship, with their hosts just one place behind them, with one defeat apiece.

Alliance batted first but were penned in by excellent bowling from Paddy Slane, who took 3-13 runs, while star man Ed Rimer took two catches in the field, to restrict Clifton to just 50-8 off their 20 overs.

With a required run-rate of just 2.5 per over, Heworth got to their opponents' total with relative ease as opener Will Huffer scored 20, while Rimer starred with bat to put the away side to the sword with 28 not out.

Heworth will now visit Stamford Bridge in the next round of the competition on Wednesday, June 11 after Bridge beat Pocklington in their second round match.

Heworth coach Paul Whitley has challenged his side to aim for the play-offs at the end of the season.

“We want to try to go the whole of the league campaign undefeated so that we can reach the play-offs at the end of the season," he said.

"But I want all the lads to play and enjoy the season with all of them having a good crack at batting and bowling. I don’t want to sound too clichéd, but I just want all the boys to enjoy their cricket and play in the right spirit.”

The majority of other games across all age groups were rained off.
