ACOMB ‘A’ overcame York to win the Quality Solicitors Burn & Company Under-9 Championship for the third year in a row.
Staged at Pocklington, the two teams, along with beaten semi-finalists Acomb ‘B’ and Pock, put on a very high standard of competitive cricket in front of a large crowd.
York lost too many wickets to overcome an imposing score by Acomb ‘A’ in the showpiece tie.
Batting first, Dan Tingle made 31 with support from not out batsmen Ben Thornton 28, Max Kaya 25 and Oliver Walsh 23.
Kaya starred with the ball, taking 4-13, as Thomas Dook (2-3) and Patrick Wood (1-5) also got in on the wickets.
York’s Alex Wood hit the highest score in the game with 32 not out but it was not enough.
Acomb ‘A’, as zone ‘A’ winners, got to the final by beating their ‘B’ team, who were runners-up in zone ‘B’.
Thornton 30 not out, Oliver Walsh (27 not out) and Tingle (20 not out) made hay before Walsh (1-6), Wood (1-11) and Dook (1-9) restricted the Acomb ‘B’ batsmen.
In the other semi-final York, runners up in zone ‘A’, turned the tables on Pocklington who were zone ‘B’ winners.
In the third and fourth-placed game, Pocklington proved too strong for Acomb ‘B’ and avenged the defeat in the league stages earlier in the season.
Harry Stabler made the day’s highest score with 36 not out and took 1-8, Oliver Spicer struck 29 not out, while Ted Baty batted well for 15 not out.
For Acomb ‘B’ Adam Stone made 20 not out, Jacob Rooke 12 and Annie Brown 11 not out.
The trophy and medals were presented by Paul Wilkinson.
