TOP duo Jonty Atkinson and Tom Loten beat fellow Pocklington School pupils Oscar Cavill and James Laudage to win the Northern Schools’ Boys’ Under-12s Tennis Championships.

Atkinson and Loten, runners-up last year, were 10-4 winners in the final of the competition, which was held at Pocklington School.

The champions beat Bradford Grammar School 4-0 in the quarter-finals and King James’s School Knaresborough 4-0, while their final foes were 3-1 winners against St John Fisher (Dewsbury) in the quarter-final and 3-1 victors over Altrincham Grammar School in the last four.

Tennis coach Trevor Loten said: “It is an incredibly rare event to have a final between two pairs from the same school.

“Many congratulations to all four players for a remarkable achievement. “Our last victory in this contest was in 2006 with Kyle Edmund and James Bisson.”

In the U14s competition, the Pocklington doubles pairs of Angus Field and Olly Peek-Vout and Joe Laudage and Will Sangwin made it to the final 16 before being knocked out. The trophy was retained by Altrincham Grammar following a tie break shoot-out win against the Royal Grammar School Newcastle.
