HOSTS Joseph Rowntree School dominated the Under-16 National Schools’ netball tournament.

Ten teams took part with three schools entering two teams apiece.

Both ‘A’ and ‘B’ sections were captured by Jo-Ro.

The ‘B’ section was dominated by last year’s winners and hosts.

Jo-Ro played great netball to retain the ‘B’ tournament title ahead of All Saints’, who were runners-up, and Archbishop Holgate’s third.

The Joseph Rowntree ‘B’ team consisted of Eve Dawson (capt), Becky Galloway, Laura Ineson, Anna Tuffs, Jade Waudby, Antonia Miles and Shannon McCartney.

The ‘A’ team tournament was split into two sections with Huntington coasting through their section for a place in the semi-finals against Fulford, who had beaten All Saints’ to claim their place in the last four.

In the other section, the host school struggled to find their form but managed to beat Queen Margaret’s 8-3, The Mount 11-2 and Archbishop Holgate’s 9-3. A draw with St Peter’s put both in to the semi-finals with neither team keen to meet last year’s winners Huntington.

Jo-Ro came out on top by the narrowest of margins – 0.01 on goal average to win their section. Huntington beat St Peter’s 9-3 in the semi-final and Joseph Rowntree ousted Fulford 6-2. The final was a re-run of last year and Joseph Rowntree finally found their form to play fluent netball. At full-time the score was 6-6 and five minutes of extra time saw Jo-Ro take an early 3-0 lead which gave them the confidence to win 11-9 and take the U16 trophy.

Both finalists now go forward to represent York and District in Harrogate in the county round on November 27.

The Joseph Rowntree team comprised Lois Wilson (capt), Meg Cummings, Nicholl Lynch, Becky Walker, Mary Tiplady, Ruth Christy and Harriet Sissons.
