UNBEATEN City of York Hockey Club Girls’ Under-14s are heading for the national finals of the England Hockey Cup.

The triumphant girls won the recent northern finals of the competition, earning them a place in the finals on May 10 at the Olympic Park in London.

Claiming tournament top-spot, York first defeated Manchester’s leading side, Bowdon.

Finishing with superb precision, Imogen Bullinski scored York’s first goal just before half-time.

Although Bowden equalised early in the second half, York battled all the way to the finish and Imogen Emmott grabbed the winner in the dying moments.

The second match was an even tougher test against a highly skilled Midlands side from Burton-on-Trent. York goalkeeper Daisy Pennycook made numerous excellent saves and kept a clean sheet, while at the other end of the pitch Emmott slotted in a goal just before half-time and that ultimately proved enough to win.

York knew a draw was sufficient against Yorkshire rivals Wakefield to secure their dream ticket to the England finals.

Throughout the season, Wakefield had been worthy opponents but, on this occasion, the York defence held firm and the game ended goalless despite end to end drama.
