THORPE United missed out on the final of the Garforth Junior Football League Under-16s Higher Cup as they went down 2-1 at Rothwell in the semi-finals.

Rothwell dealt with the strong wind and driving rain better than their visitors and had the game won in the first half.

The opening goal came in the first few seconds of the match, an audacious long-range effort beating keeper Alex Ward. Just before half-time, a weak back pass was intercepted and slotted beyond Ward.

With the wind at their backs after the break, Thorpe created a host of chances. David Melling met a Richard Buckthorpe corner, but put his shot wide, while Corey Littlefield had a shot blocked.

Szymon Czubik intercepted a wayward pass and ran at the retreating defence before scoring to give Thorpe a platform to build on. James Arnold hit a post and bounced clear, and Rothwell held firm.
