WILBERFOSS Under-15s bowed out of the City of York Girls’ Football League Cup after a penalty shootout defeat by Ripon.

The sides were level at 1-1 after normal time and visitors Ripon went through to the semi-finals after winning 4-2 on spot-kicks.

Foss keeper Georgia Stanton was called into action in the first minute and went on to give a player of the match-winning performance.

The home side broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute when a ball over the top of the defence from captain Ellie Fitzmaurice found Syd Greening in space and the striker fired into the far corner of the net.

Ripon levelled in the 56th minute and the game went to extra time after Wilberfoss saw a chance go just wide of a post with two minutes left.

There were few scoring opportunities in extra time, although Emma Nelson was denied by the Ripon keeper in the first half.
