RUGBY youngsters at Tadcaster Grammar School are proving to be dual-code whizzkids - closing in on a rare trophy double.

The Year 7 squad have reached schools county competition semi-finals in both rugby union and rugby league - having gone undefeated in both forms of the oval ball game since forming the team at the start of the school year.

PE teacher and coach Craig Whish was proud of his lads. “The boys have played both codes of rugby since September and have not lost since forming the Year 7 team,” he said.

“They have worked extremely hard to adapt their skill sets to both codes of rugby and reach the semi- finals in both competitions.”

Their rugby union semi-final will be against St John Fisher High School, of Harrogate, on Wednesday, February 25, kicking off at 2pm at Wetherby RUFC.

They have so far beaten Ermysted’s Grammar 7-5, Driffield 33-7 and Rodillian Academy 36-33.

In rugby league, the team will next play Brigshaw or South Holderness on a date to be confirmed.

They have beaten Castleford Academy ‘B’ 40-4, Spen Valley 20-8 and Canon Lee, from York, 34-12.

The Year 7 team’s successes fol low on from those of the Tadcaster Grammar Year 8 boys, who also reached the semi-final of their football county cup.
