YORK College's rugby league team got one over on arch-rivals by proxy with a comprehensive victory in their latest outing.

The York team, who play out of the development centre coached by York City Knights, hammered Leeds College of Building 64-10 at their Sim Balk Lane base. The visitors' team have links with Hunslet Hawks, the Knights' arch-rivals in the professional game.

Jack Stearman, the York College coach, said: "I wasn't too happy with our first-half performance but in the second half we were ruthless."

Ben Pulleyn, who plays for New Earswick All Blacks ARLC juniors, led the try-scoring with four from loose-forward, while second-row Toby Welsby, a Scarborough lad, bagged a hat-trick.

Hooker Dan Richardson, another All Blacks youngster, notched two tries, with Jamie Richardson, Jamie Russo and Joe Fletcher also crossing the whitewash and Tom Willock adding eight conversions.

After two opening defeats, York College have now won their last two games in the Yorkshire Colleges League first division, and will be confident of progressing in the Colleges Cup in their next outing when they again play the Leeds College of Building.

But Stearman warned: "We've got them again in the cup next week so this win was a marker for that, but you never know with college rugby what team they could put out so we cannot expect it to be easy."
