A TEAM of five players from York's Tennisability and Tennis For All clubs represented Special Olympics City of York at the Learning Disability Regional Tennis Series Scotland in Glasgow

Players from Scotland won three of the four men’s singles gold medals, while Laura Campbell and Laura Wells ensured that both women’s singles gold medals came back to York.

Campbell and Wells dominated their respective women’s singles groups, Campbell dropping only a game apiece to Lauren Waddell and Lucy Porteous, her two Scottish opponents in division one.

Wells won the division two gold medal, losing only three games in her two matches, beating silver medallist and fellow York athlete Emma Lindsay 6-2, while Lindsay edged out Prestwick’s Frances Smiley 6-4 to secure the silver medal.

Campbell then partnered Glasgow's Stephen MacMillian to win silver in mixed doubles division one title.

The mixed doubles also brought a second gold medal of the weekend for Wells, who partnered fellow York player Cameron Long to victory in the division two event after two comfortable wins from their two matches, including a 6-2 win over silver medallists Hopkinson and Smiley.

Long also gained bronze in the men's singles division four.

Emma Lindsay partnered Matthew Wreglesworth to win bronze medal in division two of the mixed doubles.

Wreglesworth gained fourth place in the men's singles division four.

A Special Olympics City of York spokesman said: "The selection of City of York’s Campbell to represent the UK at the 2015 World Games at tennis in Los Angeles and the announcement that Sheffield will host the 2017 National Games will hopefully inspire a new crop of children and adults with intellectual disabilities to take up sport and train regularly to qualify for future Special Olympic events."

A free open taster day is planned for November 29 at York St John University. Details are available by visiting the website http://www.specialolympicscityofyork.org/index.html
