CLIFFE and Stamford Bridge are celebrating a season of success with all three teams from both clubs achieving promotion in the IT Sports Mixed Doubles Tennis League.

Stamford Bridge ensured the silverware in division three with a win at Sutton-on-Derwent, led by unbeaten Phil Rigby and Sheila Barlow in a match that Sutton needed to win to avoid one of the relegation places.

Then Bridge’s Tony Downing and Elaine Hilton’s final round 11-1 win dented the promotion aspirations of opponents Copmanthorpe.

Sutton picked up a win with an impressive team performance against Sherburn to relegate their opponents.

Wigginton hold the key to both promotion and relegation with their re-arranged matches still to play.

Cliffe have taken the second promotion place in division nine after Poppleton, who had beaten Heworth, finished their matches against champions David Lloyd.

Poppleton went down after unbeaten David Lloyd pair David Morritt and Lynn Kent won their final rubber 11-1.

Wetherby Castlegarth will be relegated from division one after losing to Fulford.

They were unable to beat Fulford’s number one pairing of Sean Evans and Eleanor Bradshaw, who were well supported by Govind Baker and Faye Garland.

Dunnington have put in a late winning flourish in division two, beating Bubwith at home, Brad Swainston and Alex Bolam starting with an 11-1 win.

However, they lost the reverse fixture to dash their hopes.

Despite a good win at Rowntree Park they will lose out to their beaten opponents on games difference – even if Park lose to York in their final match.

York and Poppleton hold the answer to relegation in division four.

James Hirst and Lauren Grant won 27 games for York as they beat David Lloyd, but in the reverse match David Lloyd’s Nick Pears and Lucy Crowther were their match-winners.

David Lloyd are now waiting for the outstanding results to see if they will maintain their divisional status.

Cliffe won the crunch promotion match when they entertained rivals Appleton Roebuck, grabbing the second promotion place behind champions Heworth.

In a close match, Cliffe secured the win to complete a hat-trick of promotion for their teams.

Alne are waiting for the final match in division five between champions Fulford and Castlegarth to decide their fate after Mike Connolly and Angie Bell led Castlegarth to a narrow win against Cawood.

Cawood shared the points in their two matches with Alne to secure survival.

The highest scorers of the week – and season so far – were Sam Goodall and Eve Brady, who won 35 games for Tadcaster in division seven.

Rufforth have won the division ten title after a victory against Sutton-on-Derwent, despite the best efforts of Sutton’s unbeaten duo of Julian Pheby and Jane Pearson.

They finished their campaign with a title-deciding match against Bishopthorpe.

Kelvin Riches and Krysia Clack won all three rubbers for Bishopthorpe, but Rufforth edged the match by only two games to win the trophy.
