DORIS NEWTON, a former York school teacher and well-known sporting all-rounder, has died aged 86.
Newton, born in Leeds, lived most of her life in York and taught physical education at York College for Girls and Queen Anne School.
She was a member of Rowntree Park Tennis Club for many years and played for York Women’s Hockey Club, switching to a role as the club umpire at the end of her playing days.
She later took up bowls and was a member of York Indoor Bowls Club.
