Every point counts now with only ten separating the top three sides in division one with two matches to play in the Tyke Petroleum Men’s Tennis League. Top dogs this week were Poppleton captain Nick Turnbull and Jack Hannah with 3-33 at Dunnington, followed by David Lloyd’s Ben Orton and Jan Dyl with 3-31 at home to Wetherby. Rowntree Park captain Ian MacAulay and Nils Morosz bagged 3-27 at Pocklington, who have been relegated.

David Lloyd top the table, with Poppleton second and Rowntree Park third.

Junior Angus Bradshaw partnered Sean Evans to 3-25 as Fulford stole a 57-51 win against his former Wigginton team-mates.

Copmanthorpe must wait another week to claim the division two trophy. Captain Graeme Butcher and Alan Partington returned another maximum from 25 games as Cop coasted to a 9-3 win at Poppleton 2. Bishopthorpe only fielded two pairs as they hosted title challengers Starbeck, who accepted 11 easy points to close Cop’s lead to less than seven.

Sutton-on-Derwent may have saved their bacon with a superb win at home to grass court rivals Stamford Bridge.

A 21-game final round, including nine games from captain Louis Los and brother Zak, stole a narrow win and 8½ precious points. Division three leaders York took a big step back towards the top flight with a convincing home success against second-placed Bubwith.

Captain Pete Goodall and Paul Whurr went unbeaten with 2½-23 after a draw with Bubwith’s Rob Jackson and Paul Blackett. Knaresborough King James have the slightest glimpse of silverware after a 12-point romp at lack-lustre Wigginton 2. Sherburn took ten points from 59 games at bottom team Appleton Roebuck to boost their chances of survival. Jonathan Sharpe and Phil Bremner reunited for 3-21. As last week’s leaders Riccall were pipped at David Lloyd 2, Fulford 2 grabbed the lead in a topsy-turvy division five. Fulford’s Matt Williams partnered John Clare to 3-28 on his debut at Strensall. Bishopthorpe 2 took only four players to Boston Spa 2, who closed to within 3 points of top. Bish, Strensall and Dunnington 2 are relegated to level four.

Division six leaders Stamford Bridge 2 dropped only one rubber against Wigginton 3. Chasers Cliffe are one point behind after losing only half a point at New Earswick. Youngsters Ollie Brooke and Callum Hancox bagged a huge 3-31 for Cliffe.

Wilberfoss 2 are third in division eight after winning 41 points from their last four matches.
