YORK’S Family Tennis Tournament played for for more than a generation is to cease.
The event was first played in 1979, but will be no more due to falling entries over the years.
Professional tennis coach Gina Huntington started the tournament for families with Peter Terry agreeing sponsorship from Terry’s chocolate factory, which became an integral part.
The championship was split into several categories – ladies (mother and daughter), men’s (father and son) and mixed doubles (father and daughter or mother and son).
Fulford won all three events in the inaugural year with mother and daughter Jean and Jill Cross, father and son Terry and Anthony Precious and Jill and Robert Cross taking the mixed doubles titles.
An husband and wife event was added in 1986 and in 1990 a further trophy was added for the best supporting club, which Poppleton claimed.
