ST PETER’S SCHOOL pupil Adam Janes and his Great Britain eights crew-mates must race in today’s repechage to clinch a place in Sunday’s final at the World Under-23 Rowing Championships.

The 18-year-old was a member of the crew that was narrowly beaten into third in yesterday’s heat at the championships in Trakai, Lithuania, behind Germany and Poland.

The first two home went straight into the final, with Great Britain now facing a repechage battle with Russia, Spain, Belarus, Romania and Lithuania at lunchtime today.

Five GB crews reached their semi-finals yesterday, taking to seven the number of boats in semis. One crew is already through to a final and the eights are one of three crews still with a chance to progress via the repechages.

Rachel Gamble-Flint, in the women’s single, Kieren Emery and Matthew Tarrant in the men’s pair, and Mike Mottram in the lightweight men’s single scull all stroked their way into the semi-finals.

The GB men’s quadruple scull and lightweight women’s double scull also qualified for the next round of racing, while the men’s double and men’s lightweight double will race again in today’s repechages.

“It’s a solid start but it’s important not to get over excited at this stage as there is still a lot to do,” said GB team manager Steve Gunn.
