YORK City Rowing Club’s Jane Jenkins, Paula Widdowson, Hilary Howe and Sue Clarke won the womens masters quadruple scull at Northwich Head.

Rowing as Masters ‘C’ in the time trial event, they beat a younger Masters ‘A’ crew from Trentham Rowing Club by six seconds.

This was the second win for Widdowson and Howe, who only began rowing last year. Both took up rowing after their children had become successful members of the junior section.

Five other York City wins came from the club’s junior section, with success for Alex Bruce in J15A single sculls; Sally Downing and Becky O’Keefe in WJ15A double sculls; Chris Burgess and Ed Etheridge in J16A double sculls; Ethan McGahon, Eddie Hunter, Ciaran Longmore and James Kelly in the J17A quadruple sculls; and Chris Burgess, Charlie Wagstaff, Ed Etheridge and James Turton in IM3.

Junior coach Phil Jones said: “These successes are important indicators of early season form.”

Most of the junior scullers will be competing for the Yorkshire and Humberside region in the UK Junior Inter Regional Regatta on Saturday, April 27 at the National Water Sports Centre Nottingham.

Meanwhile, the local regatta season starts with the York Spring Regatta on May 7.
