HAXBY 1 were the winners of the annual Martyn Kennedy Memorial Netball Tournament at Archbishop Holgate’s School in York.

A record entry of 18 teams took part in the event, which raises funds for the intensive care unit at York Hospital, where teenager Martyn died almost 16 years ago.

The tournament was divided into two competitions, with teams in the higher divisions of the York & District Netball League competing for the Memorial Trophy and the lower division sides contesting the Kennedy Cup.

Haxby 1 went through the tournament unbeaten and they finished ahead of runners-up Rawcliffe Rebels, with Elvington third.

Osbaldwick were fourth, with Panthers fifth, Rufforth sixth, RI Rioters seventh, Haxsters eighth and Haxbelles ninth.

The cup section was won by Rawcliffe Rascals, beating Stamford Vikings into second place, with Millers and CSSC sharing third place.

Haxby Juniors were fifth, Melbourne sixth, Team Turf seventh, RI eighth and Selby ninth.

The tournament raised £725 through entry fees, refreshments, cakes, a raffle and a tombola.

League chair Val Kennedy will present the proceeds to the hospital.
