Haxby inched closer to recapturing the York & District Netball League crown when their first team prevailed in the first clash of the season against current champions Railway Institute 1.

Tentative play from both teams laced the opening exchanges before the Haxby shooting axis of Lynn Officer and Gemma Gibson struck to build a substantial 14-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.

In a near-repeat of the opening quarter, Haxby opened up a 26-12 advantage by half-time, and despite the falling rain, both rivals produced excellent displays in the third section with Haxby 54-22 up.

In the final quarter, RI's Liz Powell as GK and 18-year-old GD Polly Mennell fed the ball down court via central players Caroline Jay, Claire Hudson and captain Jo Long to the shooting pair of Teader and Hutchinson, but Haxby hung on to win 54-27.

There was a triple celebration as Haxby 2nds ousted newly-promoted Rufforth A' 35-27, while inspired shooting from Georgina Collinge and Natalie Wadsworth sealed a narrow 28-26 division one win for Haxby 3rds against Millers A'.
