EAST Yorkshire’s Guy Smith suffered frustration in the latest round of the American Le Mans Series at Long Beach.

The 38-year-old Beverley-born sportscar driver qualified second fastest in the 32-car field around the narrow 1.968-mile street circuit for the two-hour race. But co-driver Chris Dyson hit the barriers in their Thetford/Norcold sponsored Dyson Racing Lola Mazda Coupe, the resulting damage causing instant retirement from second place.

Smith’s latest misery comes on the back of the team’s Sebring retirement last month and leaves the 2011 ALMS champion and 2012 series runner-up pointless.

“Despite the early race setbacks, we are in a better position with this car than we were 12 months ago,” said Smith.

The next round of the American Le Mans Series is the American Le Mans Monterey on May 11.
