GOALS flowed as City of York Hockey Club men’s first team lashed visiting Leeds 5-3 in the North League first division.

York opened the scoring through a Danny Ellwood flick into the net as a scant reward for their dominance. Alex Cockram fired past the keeper’s right hand to double the lead.

After Leeds countered, York restored their two-goal cushion after Freddie Heijbroek pounced on a defensive error.

The to and fro nature continued when Leeds struck again only for Heijbroek to bag his second.

The lead was cut again to 4-3, but the points were sealed when Tom Feasby collected a loose ball in the ‘D’ following a series of saves and reverse-shot past the keeper.

City of York II enjoyed a royal weekend with two convincing victories.

They toppled hosts Old Malton I 3-1 in the premier division of the Yorkshire League after roaring 3-0 up by half-time through strikes from Pat Herriott, Dan Tompkins and Dominic Firth.

That success was bettered 24 hours later when they travelled west to advance to the second round of the England 2nd XI Cup with a 4-2 win at Preston, who play two divisions higher.

Despite enjoying the bulk of the initial possession, Preston were breached by Dan Ellwood to shock the home crowd.

A reverse stick effort drew a leveller, but York went in front again on the stroke of half-time through defender Danny Vaughan after a penalty corner was only partially cleared.

Buoyed by fresh belief, a cross from Tompkins, who had gone close just seconds earlier, was slotted in by Robert Prentice.

Preston rallied with a drag flick from their first penalty corner, but after a spell of stoic defence York broke clear with Ellwood on the right. The ball broke to Prentice who finished expertly.

Despite being depleted by injuries and unavailability, City of York III powered to a 3-2 win at Brigg in division two, where the visitors’ ‘keeper Brian Ignjatovic was in defiant form.

Tim Lister smoked a superb shot into the net for the opener before almost as fierce a shot from Rob Prentice caught the Brigg keeper in the groin. He was unable to take any more part in the tie and was replaced.

However, just before the interval Brigg levelled past a beleaguered Ignjatovic.

A slick short corner move allowed Pete Richardson to strike York’s second 15 minutes into the second half and after, a shot was parried, Lister seized on the rebound to notch his second.

The two-goal lead lasted all of a few minutes when York were slow to react to a Brigg counter attack and the hosts scored with a goal in off an upright.

Brigg exerted fierce pressure from then to the final whistle but York held out, aided by Ignjatovic’s reflexes and a goal-line clearance from Sam Baker.

Away-day success was enjoyed by York IV, who edged a five-goal thriller at Leeds University II in division three.

York led 2-0 at half-time through Joel Wilson and Rob Unsworth.

Leeds countered shortly after the interval to level, but displaying ample character, York responded when James Fitton blasted home a pass from Greg Sykes to keep York six points clear at the top.

A spirited show was not enough for City of York VIII to prevent a 3-0 home defeat to Wakefield Vi in division six north.

City of York Badgers shared the honours against Bradford.

After withstanding early pressure, York went ahead through Anna Good at a short corner following good work by Jacob Birch on the right.

Bradford got a well deserved equaliser midway though the second half .
