A DISAPPOINTING 9-2 defeat left City of York men’s I floundering near the foot of the North Hockey League premier division table.

Winless City of York are second from bottom with only two points from their six games after Saturday’s Huntington School loss to high-flying Oxton I.

City were able to score two consolation goals, firstly through a diving penalty spot deflection by Alex Cockram after Rich Cockram and Jonathan Jenkin combined well to create the opportunity, and then from Maciek Wieczorek via a short corner drag flick.

City of York II are also second from bottom in their table – the Yorkshire League premier division – following a 2-2 draw with Boston Spa I.

City fell behind after only two minutes as the first penalty corner of the game was put away.

Boston Spa pushed for a second, but were denied by some fine saves from captain Jonathan Doyle in goal, plus some excellent defending from James Greenall and Peter Perryman.

The game sparked into life in the final few minutes of the first half.

Jonathan Kilmartin’s surging run down the left fed Alex Fletcher and he scored for the third week in a row.

Almost straight from the push back, Doyle denied Boston again and City broke away for Dan Ellwood to score.

City looked comfortable in the second half until Boston were pulled level from a defensive lapse.

A ball played into the ‘D’ looked to be heading out harmlessly, but a forward nipped in before the ball could cross the byline and square it for a simple tap-in.

City pushed forward in search of a winner, and earned a penalty stroke when Chris Bolt’s goalbound effort struck a covering defender’s foot bang in front.

However, Richard Chandler’s effort rattled off the crossbar and out to safety.

City of York III, one off the foot of division two to complete a trio of struggling teams, went down 4-2 at Leeds Adel Carnegie II.

York started well and forced a series of short corners but the home side took the lead on ten minutes after a breakaway.

A few minutes later, a wayward pass was intercepted and an unmarked Adel player at the top of the ‘D’ powered home.

More sloppy defending allowed Adel to go 3-0 ahead early in the second half.

York finally found the net from a short corner when Chris Dutton deflected the ball in.

As York were pressing for another goal, Adel took advantage to go 4-1 up.

In the dying minutes, York pulled another goal back through Andrew Pooley.

City of York IV swept to a 5-2 victory over ten-man Rotherham II in division three.

York scored four good goals in the first half.

The first came from a sweeping move that started on the right and was finished by Danny Vaughan from the left. Further goals came from Phil Hughes, Zach Moore and Greg Sykes.

Rotherham scored immediately after half-time, but York came straight back with another goal from Greg Sykes.

The rest of the second half was scrappy and Rotherham got a second goal after a defensive error.

York’s man of the match was Harry Heyes.

In division four north, City of York V beat Thirsk I 2-1 with goals from Chris Allerton and Will Blackburn.

A gritty performance by City of York VI went unrewarded as they lost 3-1 at Ben Rhydding V.

York trailed 1-0 at half-time after being denied a clear penalty flick for a foot on the line save.

York levelled after another spell of sustained pressure, as a well worked short corner by Keith Wilson and Rob Able was hammered home by Pat Birch.

Ben Rhydding secured the points with a short corner that was quickly followed by a third following a York mix-up.

City of York VII beat Acomb II 4-0 in division five north, while City of York VIII’s game at Leeds Adel VI in division six north was postponed.

City of York Badgers put up a spirited performance against a strong Thirsk side en route to a 4-1 defeat.

York trailed 2-0 at half-time and Thirsk doubled that lead before Jack Fletcher got them on the scoresheet.
