MEDALS galore have been garnered by City of York Special Olympics athletes.

The tennis team returned from a two-day tournament in Nottingham with a clutch of medals.

Jake Vicars struck gold in the men’s division six singles – a feat matched by Lewis Brown in division seven and Amy Cook in the women’s division two event.

Cameron Long finished runner-up to Vicars to take the silver medal and Charlie Pickering claimed silver in Brown’s division.

Laura Campbell won silver in women’s division one, while Laura Wells came home with bronze in division two.

Mathew Wreglesworth received a ribbon for finishing fourth in men’s division five, while Emma Lindsay was fifth in division two.

In the men’s division two doubles, Vicars teamed up with Robert Wright to win bronze and a bronze also went to Brown and Pickering in division three.

Long and Wreglesworth finished fourth in division three.

Campbell and Sarah Simpson were bronze medal winners in the women’s doubles, with fourth place going to Amy Cook and Emma Lindsay.

Tennisability gold medals for effort were won by Wreglesworth and Lindsay.

Five bowls players representing York all won medals in various categories at the Yorkshire & Humberside competition sponsored by Co-operative Funeral Care York at New Earswick IBC.

Gemma Broadhead improved on her display last year by claiming gold in category three.

First-timers Nicholas Roberts, Sam Hinde and Andrew Bayston made a clean sweep of category six, collecting gold, silver and bronze respectively. Katie Douglas won gold in category seven. Medals and certificates were presented by Kath Sykes, Yorkshire Ladies president, Philip Taylor, of Co-operative Funeral Care York, and Mike Roberts.
