CITY of York Athletics Club ace Richard Buck opened his 2011 indoor season with second place in the 400 metres at the Russian Winter Games in Moscow.

The 24-year-old one-lap specialist clocked 47 seconds, only nine 100ths of a second adrift of the Russian race winner to signal his comeback from an injury-wrecked 2010.

The time has catapulted Buck to the top of the British indoor rankings for the season ahead of next weekend’s Aviva Indoor UK Trials and Championships in Sheffield.

Geoff Barraclough, Buck’s grandfather and York-based coach, said: “It’s a very pleasing start for him.

“He eased off last year because he was working on his Achilles, so he missed the Commonwealth Games to have a longer training period.

“He has just got back from a fortnight training in South Africa and this sets him up for the national championships.”
