ELITE coach James Richards has hailed the “tremendous” progress of York City Baths Club swimmer James Wilby.

Wilby, 19, delayed applying for university places to concentrate on his swimming for a year and the move has paid off with personal bests in each of his three breaststroke events, the 50 metres, 100m and 200m.

Having lowered all three PBs at the British Gas International Meet in Leeds in March, Wilby clocked new best times in the 50m and 200m at the British Gas Championships in Sheffield last week.

Richards said: “James’ 50m and 200m swims (in Sheffield) were fantastic.

“The 200m breaststroke result was the highest he’s ever placed at this level of competition.

“James was very disappointed with his 100m swim, but from my point of view, James has made tremendous progress in all three breaststroke events.”

Richards added: “He decided to take a year out of education to focus on his swimming career and to consider his university options.

“He spent some time in Loughborough earlier this year and decided that’s where he wants to go.

“I totally agree with his decision. There’s a good group of lads down there who swim similar events. He’ll fit in well.

“It’s been a pleasure working with him this season.

“He’s got the potential to go as far as he wants.”
