York squash aces IT Sports Wigginton have clinched the Yorkshire League division one men’s title to seal a triumphant return to the top flight.

Champions Wigginton will now ply their trade in the premier division after an absence of several years from the elite tier.

The squad routed hosts Queens Halifax 5-0 to wrap up their promotion challenge in style.

Mackenzie Nichol, playing at number five, beat Halifax’s Craig Talbot 3-1 before team manager Ian Tooms overcame David Boothroyd by the same scoreline.

Wigginton’s in-form youngster Tom Pepper played third in the order and routed Martin Sunderland 3-0 in a battling encounter.

Captain Jon Duffield also put in a strong performance to brush aside Halifax veteran Graham Jackson 3-0 before Wiggy’s number one seed Simon Myring put a gloss on the whitewash with a 3-0 victory over Luke Haigh.

Wigginton took the championship with a game in hand and manager Tooms praised his side’s commitment.

He said: “It’s been a great team effort from all the lads and it’s a pleasure to see youngsters like Pepper and Nichol breaking into the team and winning.”
