IT SPORTS Wigginton stepped up their bid for a return to the Yorkshire Squash League premier division with a 3-2 victory at home to Huddersfield.

The York side, who lost the reverse fixture 4-1 earlier in the division one season, are now seven points clear of closest rivals Abbeydale, of Sheffield, with a game in hand.

Manager Ian Tooms got the ball rolling for the hosts with a 3-0 victory over Huddersfield number five Matt Hart, winning 15-9, 15-5, 15-9.

Wiggy number four Tom Pepper also won 3-0 against Andy Flynn, taking the games 15-4, 15-5, 15-8.

Captain Jon Duffield lost 3-2 in a classic match against veteran Mark Francis, 15-17, 10-15, 15-10, 15-5, 13-15, and Wigginton number one Simon Myring also went down 3-1 to Glen Ragou, losing 15-10, 9-15, 7-15, 9-15.

With the match poised at 2-2, Ray Burke clinched the points with a 3-1 victory over Mike Tolman by a 19-17, 11-15, 15-9, 15-13 scoreline.
