IT Sports Wigginton made it three wins in a row as they beat bottom club Pontefract 3-2 in the Yorkshire Squash League premier division.

The win puts Wigginton, who lost their first three games of the season, into the top half of the league ahead of the match with table-toppers Queens next week.

Simon Myring eased past James Thompson 3-0 in the opening game, but Ed Shannon and Chris Rusling both slumped to surprise defeats, Rusling clawing his way back from 2-0 down to 2-2 before losing the decider to Taminder Gatu Aura.

This gave Pontefract a 2-1 lead overall, but Josh Harris levelled the match as he beat Alex Hodgetts 3-1.

It was then left to professional Pete Bilson to seal the win for Wigginton with a 3-0 triumph over Sam Wileman.

Manager Ian Tooms said: “Historically, Pontefract have been our arch rivals so we wanted to win.

“The new players are doing well. Ed Shannon may have lost but he has toughened us up as a team.

“The next match is going to be tough, they are the favourites for the league. But we have people to come back in, the likes of McKenzie Nichol and Jonny Duffield who were regulars last season. The team is a lot stronger than last year and it’s hard for them to get a game.”

The Pontefract result means Wigginton now have 74 points, 17 points off the leaders Queens but, importantly, 22 clear of the one relegation place.

Tooms said: “My aim this season is not to go down. If we could finish second bottom I would be delighted.

“So to sit where we are now is a real achievement.”
