ACOMB ace Joe Hinds is eager for his upcoming week’s holiday to be soon over after the boxer’s brash impact in the ring.

Since moving to Henry’s Gym – the 10,000 square foot base run by York’s most distinguished professional boxer Henry Wharton – the 22-year-old Hinds has rattled up a stunning brace of victories.

The joiner dismantled Ruben Alves in a three-round amateur contest at Hull and then followed that with a similarly emphatic unanimous points verdict over Lee Coulson at Leeds Town Hall.

Against St Vincent Club opponent Alves, Hinds took the advice of Wharton to keep clear of a fearsome big punch.

Recalled Hinds: “Henry’s plan for me was to move constantly around the ring, which I did, and then use my skills to keep tagging him. It worked so well.”

His second showdown pitted him against Coulson of the Halifax Star Club, Hinds adding: “He had less experience, but he came firing at me for the full three rounds. I had to make sure I was on my A-game to get another unanimous decision.”

The second of those contests signalled the end of the current boxing season which will start up again in September.

But Hinds, who is away from training for the next week, will return to the Acomb-based gym to put in a summer of strenuous training to ensure tip-top condition for the resumption of competitive hostilities in autumn.

“I’ve been coming to Henry’s for five months now and things have just gone from strength to strength,” said Hinds.

“It might sound a bit corny but it is just like home for me and Henry’s training has been great. I could not wish for it to have gone any better.

“The progress I feel I’ve made is brilliant and everyone at the gym is getting that hunger and wanting to be on shows when the new season starts.”
