UNIVERSITY Students ‘B’ opened their men’s division one account with a 5-4 win at RI Tuesday/Thursday ‘B’ in the York Badminton League.

Adam Hirst and Ollie Metcalfe put in the best campus display with three straight wins for 126-91. Chris Wan and Mike Powell took two Institute wins but lost out 11 and 16 to Hirst and Metcalfe.

RI Tuesday/Thursday ‘A’ were good value for a 5-4 win at Selby/Drax ‘A’. Chris Wan and Paul Forth swung the match in the final rubber with a nail-biting 18-21, 23-21, 22-20 success over Phil Brunyard and Stuart Baxter.

RI Monday/Wednesday ‘B’ posted a 6-3 home win over a stubborn Selby Jubilee ‘A’ in men’s two.

Loz Smith and Dave Preece were the Institute stalwarts with all three for 142-84 which included a 16-21, 21-12, 21-15 triumph over James Dawson and James Barrett, who took two Jubilee wins.

RI Tuesday/Thursday ‘C’ also came good with a hard fought 7-2 home success over Selby/Drax ‘B’.

Brian Morley and Ian Sinker were best for RI with three wins for 143-106, which included a 17-21, 21-19, 21-14 conquest of the best Drax pair of Naz Shefta and John Prickett.

University Staff Club had mixed fortunes in men’s three. After a 5-4 home defeat by Fulfordgate they pulled off a good 7-2 win at a young RI Monday/Wednesday ‘C’ team.

Matt Hobman and Clive Debenham top-scored for Fulfordgate with three straight wins for 126-76, while Kriang Sak and Win Tee laid the foundations for a staff victory with three wins for 126-83.

Copmanthorpe played well to open their account after a 6-3 home win over Selby Jubilee ‘B’.

Ian Thompson and Iao Cheng-ge put in an excellent series for the village-based club and were rewarded with three straight wins for 126-71.

Huntington Ladies made it two wins in a row after an 8-1 away success over Selby Jubilee in division two.

Bev Tebbutt and Angela Hobman kept up their long understanding with another straight games maximum for a total of 126-83. Jo Murphy and Ning Dawson picked up the Jubilee consolation with an 18 and 16 win over Lisa Debenham and Hazel Winfield.

St John’s opened their inaugural mixed one season with two heavy defeats. They lost 7-2 at home to Riverside ‘A’, and then went down 9-0 at at RI Monday/Wednesday ‘B’.

Yorkshire county player Alex Fowler and Margaret Sinclair took three Riverside wins with relative ease for a total of 126-78. Dave Preece and Joyce Petch were best for the Institute with three straight wins for 126-92.

RI Tuesday/Thursday ‘A’ scored a 7-2 home win over Riverside ‘A’ in mixed two. Matt Hitchens and Penny Sheard top-scored for the Institute with a return of 157-128, which included a 16-21, 21-11, 21-19 win over Andrew Newby and L Smith who took both successes for the visitors.

Fulfordgate ‘A’ went three from three after a superb 8-1 win at Tadcaster 86 ‘B’.

Matt Hobman and Hazel Winfield led the line with three straight wins for 126-59. They were well supported by Steve Walker and Zoe Cook who took their three victories for 147-104.
