A LATE try saw University of York rugby union second team snatch victory over Northumbria in the latest round of British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) fixtures.

The second string won 22-18 after their opponents launched a second half fight back from 17-6 down at the interval to 18-17 in front.

York dominated the first period, scoring three tries, but Northumbria scored two tries and a conversion to take the lead before York’s late show.

At 3-3 York’s doubles pairings kept their nerve, Henderson and Dainty securing a 21-9, 21-16 win before Hailey and Kanabar saved five match points en route to a 21-16, 24-22 victory.

The last time the women’s hockey firsts travelled to Long Bentham they lost 1-0 to Newcastle seconds, but this week they triumphed 5-1 to keep their promotion dream alive.

The thirds were held to a 1-1 draw against top-of-the-table Teesside thirds.

The netball first team cruised to a 43-13 win over Sunderland firsts to quash any fears of relegation, but the thirds lost 39-28 to Sheffield.

The men’s volleyball firsts lost 3-0 to Northumbria, but the women’s firsts beat Sheffield Hallam 3-1.
