UNIVERSITY of York women’s rugby team followed a a 108-0 victory with a 78-0 defeat of Newcastle in a farcical home tie, writes Alex Macdonald.

The visitors turned up with only 11 players, resulting in an 11-a-side match with uncontested scrums. From the time Lucy Bradley crossed, York never looked back, scoring another 11 tries.

But Harriet Giles had a rare off-day with the boot, converting only four of 12 attempted conversions. The netball club had all three sides playing at home but managed just one win, the firsts toppling Newcastle 49-34 to extend their season’s unbeaten streak.

Their distribution from the back, often started by GK Carrie Green, allowed them to launch many raids, while GS Grace Clarke was as clinical in front of the basket.

The second team unluckily lost 40-37 to Durham after fading away in the final few minutes. The thirds were soundly beaten by a strong Leeds Trinity team.

The women’s lacrosse team continued their fine start to the season to go top of British Universities and Colleges Sports Northern 2B league.

They survived a late onslaught from Newcastle to win 13-10 with Chloe Searle and Alex Whitehand the standout performers.

The match was tied 2-2 after ten minutes, with Newcastle entrenched in the York half, when Whitehand stole possession and broke the length of the pitch before firing in a stunning goal.

Searle took advantage of the fresh momentum to fire in a rapid hat-trick.

The first quarter ended 7-3, but the dynamic changed at the start of the second quarter with Searle quickly adding her fourth and fifth. York remained in the ascendancy, before a cagey third quarter resulted only in one goal.

The final quarter began 11-5 in which Newcastle grew in confidence, but York held on to leapfrog their opponents in the league table.

The men’s football team lost 3-1 to Hull, who dealt out a lesson in finishing to end a run of four straight victories.

Meanwhile, American football player Fred Isaac has broken in to the Great Britain student team, highlighting the successes the club has had over recent years.

The defensive tackle has been instrumental in the advancement of the club and his elevation to the squad is a result of three years’ hard work.
