York are now closing in on top spot in British Universities and Colleges Sport Northern 1A and a promotion play-off.
The seconds lost 13-8 to Northumbria seconds, while the thirds were edged out 24-20 by Sunderland firsts.

There was disappointment for the men’s football firsts as a 1-1 draw against Teesside firsts denied them promotion from Northern 3B.
The seconds dominated Teesside thirds to come away with a 6-2 victory, while the thirds, already promoted from Northern 6B, lost 4-3 to Teesside fourths.
All three netball teams tasted victory. The firsts hosted Sunderland firsts and were 44-32 winners.
The seconds won 46-34 at Leeds Trinity and the thirds put in a strong second half to claim a 34-26 win over Sheffield thirds.
York men’s hockey firsts have yet to stave off relegation from Northern 2B after a 2-2 draw against bottom of the table Durham fourths.
The seconds finished their season on a high with a 3-1 win over Leeds Met thirds which saw them leapfrog their opponents in Northern 5B.
The women’s seconds drew 2-2 with Sheffield thirds in Northern 5B.
The men’s seconds badminton team beat Leeds 8-0 in Northern 4B. The men’s thirds lost 8-0 to Durham seconds and are fifth in that same division.
In tennis, the men’s firsts overcame Sheffield firsts 8-4, but the seconds lost 10-2 to Leeds Met fourths.
The men’s fencing firsts were edged out 118-110 by Newcastle firsts.
The bottom of the table clash in women’s basketball Northern 2B saw York firsts leapfrog Sheffield firsts after beating them 67-52.
The men’s squash firsts lost 3-2 to Sheffield Hallam firsts in Northern 2B.
York firsts’ 13-4 defeat by Manchester firsts saw them relegated from table tennis Northern 1A.
