YORK Indoor Bowls Club, having trailed by the odd shot for most of the game, defeated Yorkshire League division one leaders North Cave 73-71.

The Thanet Road side collected 10 points and moved to within four of the table-toppers.

At home, Harley Wenham, Mick Cooney, Kieran Earnshaw and Tony Horobin took control between the 12th and 15th ends when they scored nine shots without reply to take a 22-7 lead en route to a 27-11 victory.

John Dudding, John Crowe, Malcolm Lewars and John Whiteley, having been level, dropped a five on the 14th end and this proved decisive as they lost 19-14.

Away, Alan Vowles, Phil Parsons, Neal Macdonald and Paul Mooring were 15-13 down with four ends to play but a four plus two twos saw them win 21-16.

Graham Instone, Jack Woodworth, Mark Clarke and Dave Stroughair lost 24-11.

In division three, York fell 94-64 to Leeds with only Pete Waring, Mal Rankeillor, Trevor Scott and Tony Bryan being successful, going clear from 17-17 to finish 26-17.

Charlie Arnett, Colin Robinson, Dave Preece and Mike Snowden led 18-13 with two to play yet lost 19-18.

Away, Wally Darbyshire, Jack Parsons, Norman Ellis and Pete Bradley lost 23-15, and Andy Lockwood, Ron Munro, Paul Craven and Ray Clark crashed 35-5.

Meanwhile, York Vikings remained top of the Yorkshire Over-55s League division one after an impressive maximum points 98-47 victory over Leeds.

Away, Alan Vowles, Mick Cooney, Malcolm Lewars and Tony Horobin trailed 3-0 after two ends but lost only three more as they triumphed 29-13.

Ken Griffiths, Alan Hampshire, Graham Instone and John Whiteley trailed 16-14 with five ends to play but a five then a single set up a 21-18 victory.

At home, Dave Dale, Dudley Williams, Jim Robertson and Graham Brooke only dropped singles on their way to a 24-7 success, while Malcolm Harrison, Trevor Wilford, Roger Ford and Phil Parsons led throughout, only losing five ends in a 24-9 triumph.

In division two, York Knights got back to winning ways as they beat Scarborough 108-67, picking up 12 points via three winning rinks.

The away leg saw Charlie Arnett, Mal Rankeillor, Barry Walker and Tex Stevens turn a 7-4 deficit into a 19-7 lead on their way to an excellent 24-15 victory.

Doug Mitchell, Bill Carter, David White and Geoff Walker were struggling at 22-5 but, vitally for the aggregate score, won seven of the last eight ends to only go down 23-17.

At home, Colin Robinson, Trevor Scott, Allen Clapham and Ray Clark picked up seven shots on their first end followed two ends later with a four to lead 11-2, and they never looked back as they won 37-14.

Harley Wenham, Dave Holder, Ray Calpin and Malcolm Thompson led a tight game 11-9 before winning five successive ends, yielding 15 shots, to set up a 30-15 victory.
