CITY of York Hockey Club’s Men I lost a gripping game 3-2 at home to Newcastle University as they slipped to fourth in North League division one.

The hosts started well with a high-intensity press and opened the scoring through Alex Cockram’s penalty flick.

Newcastle were put under continued pressure, but were good value on the break and equalised after a series of short corners.

Tom Feasby restored City’s lead before the break, slotting calmly under the onrushing keeper.

In the opening stages of the second half, the students equalised quickly.

However, the hosts still looked to have a good grip on the game and were making plenty of good gestures, but poor discipline ultimately proved costly, Newcastle getting the winner with 10 minutes to go following a string of cards for City.

An injury-stricken City of York II side lost their third consecutive away game 3-0 at Kingston-upon-Hull in the Yorkshire League premier division.

The hosts got an early goal and, to compound York's difficulties, young forward Robert Bradley-Consitt broke his finger only 10 minutes into the game.

Hull doubled their advantage before half-time, City giving the ball away in defence.

Good spells of play and strong running from Dan Tompkins in the centre of midfield followed in the second period, but Hull were not to be denied their third goal.

City of York III lost 4-2 at division one leaders Rotherham, and sit only two places off the bottom of the table.

Division two basement side City of York IV laboured to a 3-2 loss in their derby game at Tadcaster Magnets.

City had much of the possession and attempts on goal in the early stages, but the hosts opened the scoring from a scrappy goal, the ball ricocheting around the ‘D’.

Despite City starting the second period strongly, Tadcaster were the next to score. A counter attack led to a free hit and a bobbling ball into the ‘D’ was tapped in at the far post.

Andrew Thomson pulled a goal back for the visitors from a squared ball onto the penalty spot, and Henry Birchall levelled matters for City, smashing into the far corner from the top of the ‘D’.

Tadcaster had the final say in the game, as a shot heading wide was redirected inside the far post to give the home side their first league win of the season.

City’s man of the match was Avi Mistry.

Division three leaders City of York V drew 1-1 at home to Harrogate IV.

City of York VI lost 4-3 at home to Boston Spa II in division four north.

The visitors opened the scoring in the first minute following a slow start from City, but this was cancelled out soon after through George Trowsdale’s goal.

Two soft goals for Boston followed, before Andy Wilson pulled one back before the break.

City were the stronger side in the second half, but conceded a fourth on the counter.

Paul Rowntree narrowed the gap once again, but the hosts could not find the equaliser.

In the same division, City of York VII rescued a 1-1 draw at Mirfield.

They conceded in the first half, but Will McMullen’s second-period strike ensured the points would be shared.

Division five north high-fliers City of York VIII came from behind to win 3-1 at Bingley Bees, the goals coming from James Harrison’s second-half double and Luke Harbord’s strike.

The man of the match was Max Martin.

City of York IX remain winless in the same division after a 4-1 home defeat to high-riding Harrogate V.
