JAKE FOTHERGILL, from the Kai-Sho Karate Club in Bishopthorpe, was crowned kata champion (age 10-11 category) at the WADO International Karate Federation National Championships in London.
The annual event had been moved back from March, which prevented a number of older students attending due to school exams, but junior players from Kai-Sho still returned with a haul of nine medals in all.
Fothergill, 11, led the way, and added to his kata gold with a bronze medal in the individual fighting category.
William Kelly, 13, took silver, just missing out on gold when beaten by the British champion.
In the team kumite events (free fighting), against top teams from the UK and Ireland, Louis Formhal and Ewan Bryce, both 13, won bronze medals (age 12-13 category), as did Libby Formal and Gabriel Dvorkak (age 10-11).
Anyone interested in joining the Kai-Sho club can phone Brian Williams on 01904 701931. Training sessions are held every Monday and Thursday, from 6.30pm to 8pm, at St Andrew's Church Hall, Bishopthorpe.
