YORK golfer Simon Dyson returns to competitive action tomorrow in the Portuguese Open at the Morgado Golf Resort.

Dyson, a six-time European Tour winner, has been having treatment on his wrist since retiring from the Shenzhen International in China, two weeks ago, after just 12 holes.

His form has dipped over the last two years as a result of a wrist problem that needed surgery.

Dyson has openly admitted that there are times when he thinks his professional career may be over.

But he will be hoping for an improved performance in Portimao this weekend to boost his confidence.

The Portuguese Open is making its return to the European Tour schedule after an absence of seven years and is being dual-ranked with the European Challenge Tour.

Scotland’s Paul Lawrie, winner of The Open Championship in 1999, and former Masters champion Mike Weir will bring major tournament pedigree to the event.

The local charge will be led by two players who are fresh from leading Portugal to a quarter-final place at last week's inaugural GolfSixes event.

Home favourite Ricardo Gouveia, who topped the Road to Oman rankings following a record-breaking 2015 campaign, will tee up alongside José-Filipe Lima who graduated to the European Tour last season.

Dyson, 39, was due to play alongside former Portuguese international footballer Luis Figo today in a pro-am curtain raiser for the event.
