ACOMB men's first team season came to an exciting climax with a local derby against fellow strugglers City of York IV at Huntington.

The Tangerines struck early with an attack culminating in Ryan Smith volleying the ball home.

Acomb had a set-back 15 minutes into the half however, as centre back Pete Hilton sustained an ankle injury and had to retire from the match.

A reshuffle at the back saw Baz Whitfield move across to centre back and Smith drop into right back.

In his third game for the club, James Tindall was making some incisive runs to carve up York's defence.

One of these found him in the D, where he rounded the last man, drew the keeper, and slipped it to Jonny Brown for a simple tap in.

The Tangerines' dominance continued after the break with Stu Baxter acting as the usual thorn in the side of the opposition in the midfield.

With around 15 minutes remaining, York found some renewed vigour and Acomb came under heavy pressure, with York finally getting a consolation goal.

However, Acomb ran out the victors to keep their place in League Two and send the red and blues down to the division below.

Acomb’s men IIs had a spare weekend with Bradford IVs slipping out of their division.

* ACOMB ladies welcomed Bingley to Energise for their penultimate home game, hoping for a win to keep up their promotion charge.

The Tangerines had the worst start possible when, after three minutes, a wayward pass across their own D allowed the Bingley striker to finish past Steph Barker in goal.

Acomb's response was almost instantaneous, and four minutes later they were level after Hannah Yoward drove forward with the ball and played a one-two with Sian Klukowski before finishing into the bottom corner.

The Tangerines had a goal disallowed in the 13th minute before they did take the lead through a short corner.

Kerry Woods' initial shot hit the post and came back for Klukowski to fire the ball home.

The rest of the first half saw numerous chances for Acomb, but the Bingley goalkeeper was on top form.

The last play of the half saw Klukowski go on one of her trademark dribbles into the D and set up Kiera Woods to make it 3-1 at the break.

In the 42nd minute, the game was seemingly put to bed when Klukowski again fired the ball across the D for Wendy Watson to finish expertly with a first time shot.

There weren’t any further clear chances for either side until the 60th minute when Bingley had a short corner and Acomb keeper Barker saved the initial shot – only for the rebound to fall to the Bingley striker to slot home.

Results elsewhere meant that the Tangerines only need one point from their remaining two games to be promoted – and two points to be crowned champions.
