ACOMB are still favourites to win the Yorkshire Women’s Hockey League second division title after a 2-0 victory over Harrogate III.

Defeat would have allowed second placed rivals Hull University to take over at the top of the table with five games to play.

But goals from mother and daughter pairing Kerry and Kiera Woods kept the Tangerines two points clear as Hull won 2-0 away at Wakefield Wanderers.

Significantly, all Acomb’s remaining fixtures are against teams in the bottom half of the table.

The Tangerines started strongly against mid-table Harrogate with runs from the midfield pairing of Sian Klukowski and Georgi Woods driving into the opposition area.

They were rewarded when Kerry Woods struck from a penalty corner. Despite enjoying the majority of the possession, the home side did try and attack on the break but sound defending from Jane Elsworth, Sally Fairweather and Sam Storr kept any attack at bay.

After the interval, the Tangerines continued their offence and were rewarded when Kiera Woods pushed home from close range to double the advantage.

Acomb I were beaten 10-0 by leaders Doncaster III in the Yorkshire Men’s Hockey League division two.

The home side, who are eight points clear at the top of the table, netted three times in the first half and then, despite the heroics of Acomb goalkeeper Craig Brown, took full control to score seven times in the second period.

Acomb II were defeated 7-3 by City of York VII with goals from Tom Brown, Rob Ireland and Dave Richardson offering scant consolation from a poor performance.

Tadcaster Magnets I were beaten 6-4 by Ramgarhia I in division two. In division five north, Tadcaster Magnets II were beaten 3-0 at the Energise Sports Centre by Leeds VIII.
