CITY of York II are still stuck in the relegation zone after a 4-2 defeat to Lindum II in the Yorkshire Men’s Hockey League premier division.

James Fitton scored from a short corner for York but his side still trailed 2-1 at the interval.

York improved in the second half and were pushing for an equaliser when a long ball out of defence allowed Lindum to score again.

Neil Martin reduced the deficit to 3-2 but, despite persistence from York, another goal failed to arrive and Lindum made it 4-2 before the final whistle.

York III ended a run of four consecutive defeats in division one with a 4-1 win victory over Halifax.

The first half turned into a well-contested physical battle but it was the visitors who took the lead.

Pat Herriott forced the ball home for York at a goalmouth scrabble and doubled his tally just before the break.

Captain Chris Dutton made it 3-1 after George Good’s initial shot bounced back off the post.

Ramli and Mitchell kept things tight at the back as Halifax pushed to get back in the game. Joe Starke wrapped things up for York in the final minute.

York IV had only 12 players available for the division two game against Leeds Adel II.

Joe Lancaster made his first appearance of the season and City adopted a 4-4-2 formation in order to simplify their positioning and conserve energy.

But a poor start saw York going 1-0 down from a short corner. York re-organised at the break with Matthew Tipper moving into central midfield. However, Adel doubled their advantage.

Lancaster slotted home to give York a lifeline and then fed Joel Wilson who rounded the goalkeeper for the equaliser. The momentum was now in York’s favour and Tipper made it 3-2 when sweeping home from a short corner.

York staged a brave rearguard action but, with less then a minute to play, Adel scored a penalty corner to make it 3-3 and take a share of the spoils.

Next week sees York IV take on York V who picked up a valuable three points at third placed Brigg to boost their fight against relegation.

Flyn Mullins opened the scoring in the 2-1 victory after Will Broadbent forced the ball past the Brigg goalkeeper.

Broadbent doubled York’s lead at the start of the second half and, although Brigg pulled a goal back, York hung on for a first win in seven games.

York VI lost 4-2 against Leeds Adel IV in division four north. Henry Wilson put York ahead but Adel bounced back with two goals before Tony Brimble equalised. The last quarter of the game was a major disappointment for York who gifted the opposition two goals.

After five consecutive wins, York VIII suffered a 6-3 defeat at third placed Leodis Leeds in division five north.

Ali Birch scored the development side’s goal as Leeds took a 3-1 interval lead. Zack Pierson and Jack Allerton were on target in the second half but it was still not enough to prevent defeat.
