YORK professional boxers Danny Holmes and Harry Matthews both picked up victories in Leeds at the weekend.

Lightwelter-weight Holmes scored a narrow 38-37 points victory over Henry James from Wales to take his record to two wins from two.

After a shakey start, where he was caught by a right hand, Holmes opted to box on the back foot, sticking to jabs and double jabs rather than getting involved in a brawl.

Middleweight Matthews, the 'Pocklington Rocket', returned to the ring after an 18 month absence and won all four rounds of his contest, 40-36 points, against Kieron Gray from Telford.

Holmes is trained by Glenn Banks who also manages Matthews. However, Matthews is trained by Scarborough based Ryan Ashworth.

Both boxers expressed thanks to the 200 plus supporters who travelled to Elland Road from York as well as sponsors YBS York Building Services and Pryors Solicitors.
