THE York Cycleworks Elite Road Race proved to be a real cracker, to be won by Tom Neale of the Metaltek-Kuota Racing Team.

The 77-mile race, based at Brandsby, is contested over a seven-mile circuit around the Hambleton Hills, regarded as one of the toughest in the country.

It attracted riders from notable teams such JLT Condor, Raleigh GAC, Feather Cycles, London Dynamo and Pedal Heaven.

The circuit lived up to its fearsome reputation, with a break appearing as early as the first lap as the riders climbed the 1.1km Milking Hill, which has a gradient of 17 per cent.

Groups formed and were broken up again throughout the 11-lap race, and it all came down to a sprint between Neale, Metaltek-Kuota team-mate Adam Kenway and Pedal Heaven's Harry Tanfield, with Neal taking the win ahead of Tanfield.

Results: 1 Tom Neale (Metaltek-Kuota RT), 2 Harry Tanfield (Pedal Heaven), 3 Adam Kenway (Metaltek-Kuota RT), 4 Joseph Clark (Envelope Master Giant Sheffield), 5 Alex Dalton (Wold Top Active RT), 6 Jake Tanner (Envelope Master Giant Sheffield),7 Chris Sleath (Adept Precision RT), 8 Peter Barusevicus (Wheelbase Altura), 9 Charlie Passfield (Cycle Club Ashfield), 10 Barnabas Purbrook (London Dynamo).
