“TOO much competition for a Bank Holiday Sunday!” That was the verdict of David Lloyd 3 captain Ray Lockie, after his team had contested the match of the day in the Tyke Petroleum Men’s Tennis League.

Lockie’s team took control from the start, with a two-point, 21-game first round but a mid-match rally by hosts Wigginton 3 squared the points at 3-3.

With Lloyd claiming two points from three in the final round, they had surely beaten the division eight table-toppers, but it was not to be.

Lockie's team had narrowly lost – due to Nick O’Keeffe and Adam Houghton’s gutsy 11-1 final rubber for Wiggy, which snatched them the match bonus by 55-53, for the narrowest of 7-5 points wins.

Elsewhere, York 3 pair Jon Alexander and Neil Giltrap scrapped to three successive 6-6 draws at leaders Starbeck 3, but Rowan Brookes and Chris White once again rescued ‘Beck with an unbeaten 2½-23 to edge the result and maintain their 100 per cent winning record.

Stuart Kerr and Peter Seed starred for Boston Spa 2 in their rearranged fixture at home to Cawood.

Their 3-27 clean sheet was the stand-out in a comprehensive defeat of the division six leaders, who were clearly missing their inspirational captain.
