YORK'S Rich Corner pushed World PDC Championship quarter-finalist Alan Norris all the way before succumbing to a first-round defeat at the European Darts Matchplay tournament in Hamburg.

Norris, who was also the BDO World Championship runner-up in 2014 and is ranked 30 in the world, edged a 6-5 victory over Corner at the German venue before going out 6-3 to Benito van de Pas in the next round.

The final was won by James Wade, who defeated Dave Chisnall in another last-leg decider, having earlier disposed of world number one Michael van Gerwen at the semi-final stage.

That result represented the first time van Gerwen has been beaten in a European Tour event in 2016 and was Wade's first ranking tournament success of the year, compensating for him being overlooked for this year's Premier League field.
