HELEN WALKER and Zoe Eagles won the Ladies' Simpson Pairs for the fifth year running and the seventh out of the last eight years at York Indoor Bowls Club's finals.

Walker and Eagles beat Carol Instone and Joan Jackson 21-11 in a game which saw excellent bowling from both pairs.

Instone and Jackson led 7-6 after six ends before Walker and Eagles went on a run which saw them win all but two of the rest.

Another close game saw Dave and John Stroughair retain their Gents' Simpson Pairs title when they beat Chris Bishop and John Jennison 20-16.

Bishop and Jennison, 16-4 behind after 12 ends, made a spirited fightback, winning four of the last six ends.

Walker and Eagles were joined by Helen Wood for the Ladies Knockout Triples and capped a fine week by beating Instone, Jackson and Melanie Brooke 14-8 in another tight game which saw singles scored on all but five ends.

The Mixed Pairs final was a repeat of last year and went to the wire.

Dave Stroughair and Jackson won six of the first eight ends to lead 13-3 before title holders Alan Vowles and Wood came back to 13-10.

A two and a three gave Stroughair and Jackson a cushion only for Vowles and Wood to hit back with two threes.

The score going into the last end stood at 19-16 and Vowles and Wood laid three with a measure for four, only for the advantage to be reduced to two, Stroughair and Jackson winning 19-18.

The Gordon Little Trophy, played on a round-robin basis, saw the two unbeaten teams competing in the last game, with Lynn Tattersall, Brenda Love and David White needing to avoid defeat to take the trophy.

They led the two-wood game 9-1 after six ends but Pauline Cooper, Ken Robinson and Ken Simpson won five ends on the trot to go 11-9 up, only to lose the next three to go into the last 14-11 down.

Cooper's team laid three shots only for their opponents to come in and get the winner for a 15-11 success.

Tex Stevens picked up twos on four successive ends to take an 8-4 lead in the Gents Singles Plate final but Malcolm Thompson hit back with a three, four and one to take a lead he was never to relinquish, going on to win 21-13 and take the trophy for the first time.

Dave Stroughair, Paul Mooring and Graham Brooke retained the Gents Knockout Triples trophy for the third year running when they beat Ray Clark, Malcolm Lewars and Harley Wenham, but they were made to fight all the way as singles were scored on eight of the first nine ends.

Clark's team led 7-2 but Stroughair's men levelled with a four then a single. Singles were then shared and the game continued in similar vein up to the penultimate end where the jack moved from the last wood sent and gave Stroughair's team four shots to go into the last 13-9 ahead.

They then picked up another three as Clark's team were left chasing the score.

Meanwhile, tomorrow at 2pm, Carole Instone and Jackson take on Maureen Walker and Sheila Turpin in the Langford Pairs final.

Then on Monday, the league play-off finals take place at 6.30pm with the ladies', gents' and mixed triples, Mike Parker's team playing John Stroughair's for the gents' fours, and Margaret Moss meeting Eric Hodgson's team in the mixed fours.

Tuesday evening has been designated a reserve day for the play-off finals.

On Tuesday at 10am, the Veterans Fours League play-off takes place while Graham Instone's team meet Mal Bulmer's in the veterans' triples.
