Three of day one’s finals all went down to the last wood.

In the ladies’ pairs, Denise Elliot and Irene Warrington came from 12-8 behind to lead Pat Walker and Margaret Moss 16-12 after 16 ends.

They were then all square at 17-17 and with Elliot and Warrington holding shot, Moss with her last wood ditched the jack for two to win 19-17.

In the mixed pairs Jenny and Paul Murray kept swapping the lead with Lynn Page and Colin Pickup and they also went into the last end all square at 17-all - Page and Colin Pickup notching up a single to win 18-17.

In the any triples final, Gordon Fratson, Vic Thompson and Paul Dawson were 13-all after ten of the 18 ends against Dave Imeson, Ralph Tiplady and Barry Johnson.

Johnson’s rink had the better of the next four and went into the last end 21-19 up, but Dawson’s trio picked up a five to win 24-21.

Earlier, Johnson and Tiplady beat Andrew Fothergill and Pat Walker 21-13 in the two wood pairs.

In the Australian pairs, Liddell and Dave Clayden, from being 17-4 up after ten of the 21 ends against Dave Kermode and Brian Gray, just held on to win 20-19.
